Giving hair a little extra attention during the colder months can go a long way toward keeping it healthy, hydrated, and full of life — even when temperatures drop into the single digits.

1. Keep Your Hair Hydrated

Winter air pulls moisture from hair quickly, and dry strands are far more likely to break. Consistent hydration is key. A quality conditioner should always be used after shampooing, followed by a moisturizing leave-in conditioner once hair is towel-dried. Weekly deep-conditioning masks can help restore softness and strength, while a lightweight hair oil can keep dry ends nourished between washes.

2. Keep up with regular trims

Sticking to routine trims during winter helps prevent split ends from traveling further up the hair shaft. Many salons also offer deep-conditioning treatments that can add an extra layer of moisture and smoothness during colder months.

3. Cover your hair outdoors

Coats, boots, and scarves are winter staples — but hair deserves protection too. Wearing a hat not only provides warmth but also helps reduce tangling and shields hair from harsh winds and snow. For added protection, silk- or satin-lined hats can minimize friction, static, and unnecessary damage.

4. Let hair air-dry when possible

Heat styling can make already-dry winter hair even more fragile. Allowing hair to air-dry is often the best option, especially on days spent indoors. When heat tools are necessary, keeping the temperature low and limiting frequency can help reduce long-term damage.

Healthy hair starts internally. A balanced diet rich in colorful fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins supports hair health year-round. Drinking plenty of water — instead of sugary beverages — also helps maintain hydration from within.

Washing hair too frequently can strip away natural oils that protect and moisturize the scalp and strands. Overwashing often leads to dryness, irritation, and breakage. While hot showers may feel comforting in winter, extremely hot water can worsen dryness by removing natural oils from hair and skin. Lukewarm water is a better choice to help prevent scalp irritation and flakiness.

8. Never go outside with wet hair

Wet hair is at its weakest, and exposure to cold winter air can cause it to freeze and break. If heading outdoors after washing, hair should be fully dried — preferably using the lowest heat setting possible.
